White House Appeals to High Court Following Unsuccessful Attempt to Stop Food Stamp Payment Directive

On Friday, immediately after a US appeals court decided that the administration must fully fund food stamp disbursements, the White House sought intervention from the US top court in a further effort to halt the order.

A short time later, the highest court handed down an temporary injunction provisionally halting full nutrition assistance funds, which close to 42 million people count on to feed their families.

“Legal counsel continue fighting, around the clock, to defend and advance our agenda,” the top legal officer stated on digital channels around 9:30pm ET.

Administration officials had asked the appellate court to block a judicial decision that it distribute this month's complete food stamp assistance in the middle of a US federal government shutdown, and was denied that afternoon.

The High Court Issues Emergency Order Blocking Full Nutrition Assistance Disbursements

The supreme court's ruling came after the government petitioned a federal appeals court last Friday to stop a judge’s order requiring them to provide the upcoming entire food stamp aid amid a US federal government shutdown.

After that request to stop was denied, the administration appealed to the high court in a new effort to block the order to pay for Snap food aid benefits.

What Else Transpired Today:

  • The funding lapse brought public confidence in the US to a near record low in the fall, based on a monthly survey carried out by the Michigan University.

  • Academic community members at more than 100 campuses nationwide demonstrated against the White House's attack on college education last Friday – the opening in a organized set of nationwide, coordinated protests.

  • An Ivy League institution revealed a settlement with the administration, making it the fifth university facing scrutiny by the American authorities to reach such agreement.

  • A GOP congresswoman and strong ally of the president has publicly started her much-expected gubernatorial bid.

  • The president has granted clemency to a retired athlete on earlier financial and drug charges, citing the player's later life embrace of faith and longtime sobriety.
