Two goals from the Dutch striker guided the home side toward automatic qualification for the last 16 of the European competition against a backdrop of fan disturbances by visiting supporters.

A subdued mood in the subsequent period as the away supporters, almost to a man wearing dark attire, refrained from singing. A visiting attacker had a shot saved, and Rogers was correctly given offside before he set Malen up for a tap-in.

But as Villa made substitutions on the sixty-minute point, offering four of their main players additional rest ahead of the derby with Wolves, the visiting fans resumed their noise. A taunting chant came the home supporters’ riposte.

As the visitors eventually put the ball in the goal, a forward sidefooting in a cross, there was a protracted video review until the goal was disallowed for an offside in the buildup. The linesman on that side had shuffled up his line towards halfway and away from the Young Boys supporters by the time the decision was given.

In stoppage time, though, Joël Monteiro did crack home a late reply, after a diagonal pass, and on this occasion video review upheld Young Boys their brief jubilation.

After all the context to the previous European fixture at this venue, Villa will travel to Switzerland in December anticipating a calm trip and the victory that should safeguard their progress to the last 16 of the competition.
