The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Team
England have opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some spin while also bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
