The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
