The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
