The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
