Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was understandable for questions to be asked about his future after a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their 9th loss in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult evening at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I've received significant backing from above,” the coach stated.
“It's important to reverse this trend and secure a win naturally but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Club Management
Upon being questioned to expand on his dialogues with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me constantly of the day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “Through standard exchanges I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat so far so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Response
Slot lamented recurring weaknesses from his team in their European loss, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It’s just not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I'm beyond feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Reds side going through a period like this with performances this poor.”
He stated, “However we still have the crest on our chest. And as long as that badge is removed, we'll continue to fight.”
“Our aim is to get this team return to its rightful place, prove once more what this club is about and why people call it the greatest side in the world.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
