Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades After Leading Derogatory Songs About Manager Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford is now a member of Sheffield United only seven months after starting insulting chants directed at the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal with the second-tier strugglers through the winter. Bamford's seven-year time at Elland Road concluded by mutual consent this past summer.
One of the player's last memorable actions while at Leeds was to lead abusive chants about Wilder amid the club’s promotion party this spring. Now, the one-cap England international is set to play for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to pull his beloved club away from the relegation zone.
Previous Conflict Involving Bamford & Wilder
The pair had history prior to Leeds won promotion back to the top flight last season while Sheffield United lost the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as “a muppet” back when the situation was different in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured automatic promotion while Leeds United fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends & Moving Forward
All seems has been resolved with United, the league's lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost in attack while Bamford looking to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, called Wilder the next day.
Wilder stated back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain regarding the words used from a fellow professional! However I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We spent a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and had a half-hour chat with him and he is a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that’s an integral part of football at every level, even on a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I told him that to Pat.”
