‘Oh How We Will Miss This Man’: Meg Ryan Shares Emotional Tribute to Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the departed director Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the hit rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Tragic Discovery
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA this past weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “Our gratitude, Rob and Michele, for your faith in true love, stories, and joy. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
Court Case Developments
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being held without bail. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy found her father’s body.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan went on to write. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Hollywood Tributes Pour In
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner via comments shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“No one matched his comic instinct, his dedication to rhythmic dialogue, or his elegant sharpening of drama,” it read. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
A Storied Career
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, grossing more than $93 million worldwide and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner was introduced to Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were connected through Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.
Reiner’s extensive filmography comprised classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
