Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
