Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
