Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Exits After Shift Into Chicken.
A chief executive of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its directors.
Leadership Transition
The former CEO is departing after only 24 months in leadership, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for over 20 years, had attempted to redirect the UK's biggest pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, stating in a recent interview there was not âhuge potentialâ left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the quickest rising menu item in the international market.
Governance Disagreements
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between Rennie and the board over his approach and direction, although Domino's announcement said he was departing âthrough mutual consentâ.
Recent Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain launched its chicken-focused product line â which Rennie called a âsignificant new phaseâ for the organization â and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the firm is still planning to expand it across its extensive network in the coming year as planned, it regards chicken products as complementary to its primary pizza operations.
Board Statement
Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: âThe board believes that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and profitability in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on selecting the right chief executive to direct the careful implementation of that expansion plan.â
Industry Challenges
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said transactions dipped by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it warned that the takeaway market had âintensifiedâ as it attributed economic uncertainty in the period before the government announcement and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a 15% drop in half-year profits.
Rival chains are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut announced the closure of dozens of outlets a recently, after the company behind its outlets entered insolvency.
Health Initiatives
Adapting to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has introduced light products, such as its light base line of bakes below 400 calories as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 kcals. A big margherita has 2,171, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and previously worked for the betting firm William Hill. It is believed that she prefers not to take on the top job permanently.
She said: âThe company has a multiple ongoing development and performance initiatives that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.â
She added these comprised additional efforts on the company's supply chain and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
The pizza chain is also in need of a permanent chief financial officer until the spring, when Andrea comes aboard from the drinks company a well-known firm. In the meantime, Richard Snow serves as acting financial officer.
