Far-Right Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Next Leader.
After a definitive second-round vote, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily built on promises to combat increasing violence and significantly restrict immigration.
He frequently cited migrants, especially the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an final demand for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His plans featured U.S.-style measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, electric fences, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Regional Shift
Several analysts interpret Kast's success as part of a larger conservative trend in Latin America, following recent electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts also frame it as a part of the predictable rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Solid Mandate
In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation may complicate his policy goals, such as a vow to slash public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed specifics.
"We have many aspects about how a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not said the way he will achieve them," said a political expert.
The expert added, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. However where there is considerably less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
