Child of Previous South African Head of State Zuma Denies Terrorism Allegations as Court Case Commences
The offspring of previous South African President Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over statements she made on social media four years ago during violent protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her dad.
A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
She has been accused of encouraging this violence and is charged with accusations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.
Background of the Legal Matter
The protests were concentrated in the regions of the Gauteng province and KZN and came after the ex-leader's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has consistently rejected the charges against her, with her attorney earlier calling the prosecution's case as weak.
She has also consistently said the charges against her were an bid to address political scores with her dad after he established his own party and ran against the ANC.
Support and Court Representation
This was supported by the foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and familial harassment" against the former president and his relatives.
A small number of supporters from her party, her party, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other group representatives attended the court sessions inside.
Her legal team has maintained that the testimony presented by prosecutors is inadequate and fails to provide compelling grounds for a criminal finding.
