An Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
During the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange accommodation after getting there, yet when I arrived, a major event was in town and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport â but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing quite what to do and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking it was a place to spend the night in an establishment that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing the admissions interview the next day, however, being a broke student, I couldnât afford.
We could all use more folks with such compassion.
I must have looked lost as a young woman saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I was welcome to sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University â an ideal turn of events, as thatâs where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: one filled rolls she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a secure location and secure to sleep.
Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she accepted as a young woman allowing a man sheâd just met stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance â but still incredibly thankful.
I didnât end up study at ANU, and I didnât meet that kind stranger again, but Iâve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. I hope the universe has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
